Robbie Savage has slammed Darrell Currie after the commentator suggested that a save from Glasgow Rangers’ Allan McGregor against Slavia Prague was better than Gordon Banks’ against Pele in the 1970 World Cup.
Savage slams McGregor praise
McGregor made a huge save towards the end of the clash against Slavia to keep the scores at 1-1. It could give a massive boost to the Gers’ chances of reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Currie suggested that the save was better than the one Banks pulled off against Pele during the 1970 World Cup (BT Sport via Ibrox News), but Savage doesn’t agree. Speaking on BT Sport on Saturday, the Welshman slammed the praise from his colleague, saying:
“I tell you what, what a ridiculous statement that is.
“Wow. For that statement, you should walk off set.”

There is no denying it was a big save, and in the end it had a bigger effect on the final score than Banks’ effort – the Gers picked up an important draw while England were still defeated 1-0 by Brazil all those years ago. However, it is hard to accurately compare the two moments.
There is a reason why we still talk about that save from Banks 51 years later. It is one of the most iconic moments in World Cup history – and it is important to point out he was facing one of the greatest to ever play the game. Still, McGregor’s effort was magnificent and deserves plenty of praise – pundits must make sure not to overdo the hyperbole, though.
