Newcastle fans have been left baffled by links to former Liverpool and QPR centre-back Steven Caulker.
According to The Daily Mirror, the Magpies are considering a shock swoop to bring the 27 year-old back to England.
After a rather bizarre spell at Anfield, when he was used as an emergency striker by Jurgen Klopp, he has spent spells in Scotland with Dundee and now in Turkey with Alanyaspor.
He made 11 appearances for the Turkish outfit last term, scoring once, and the Mirror report claims he could be available for just £2m, with only one year left on his current contract.
Steve Bruce is a long-term admirer of the Englishman, claims the report, and has been making enquiries about his fitness and form during pre-season.
Fans are unsurprisingly underwhelmed by the links, asking why they would spend any amount of money on a depth addition in defence when they have Ciaran Clark as their fifth option currently, behind Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Florian Lejeune.
