Manchester United could now be prepared to fork out £52m to sign a “lethal” striker, who scored a whopping 28 goals in the 2024-25 season.
Man Utd eyeing new striker with jury still out on Sesko
Benjamin Sesko scored his first Old Trafford goal in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland last time out, but the jury is still out on the former RB Leipzig man, having failed to deliver for his national side during the international break.
Slovenia drew both of their World Cup qualifiers 0-0, with Sesko managing to get just one shot away against Switzerland last time out, and manager Matjaz Kek hasn’t been impressed by his forwards’ performances, claiming they “don’t have bloodlust.”
The trip to Anfield this Sunday provides the summer signing with a chance to make himself an instant hero, with Man United’s last Premier League victory away against bitter rivals Liverpool coming back in January 2016.
However, it appears as though Ruben Amorim may not be overly convinced by his recent acquisition, with Man United ramping up their pursuit of a new striker, recently identifying Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta as a target.
Mateta isn’t the only option on the shortlist, however, with a report from Spain revealing Man United could now be prepared to shell out €50m – €60m (£43m – £52m) for Al-Qadsiah striker Mateo Retegui, who arrived at the Saudi Pro League club from Atalanta in the summer.
Retegui was the Serie A’s top scorer in the 2024-25 season, and with United looking to sign a striker capable of making an immediate impact, the 26-year-old has now joined the list of targets.
Al-Qadsiah plan to retain the Italian’s services, given that he has only just arrived at the club, but a deal could be possible if the Red Devils table a tempting proposal.

ByDominic Lund "Lethal" Retegui could excel at top European club
Given the financial incentives on offer, it is understandable that top players are convinced to move to the Saudi Pro League, but the Italy international still has a lot left to give at the very highest level, and could have the ability to become one of the world’s best strikers.
The 2024-25 campaign was the Argentina-born striker’s most impressive to date, scoring 28 goals in all competitions, which was enough to secure Atalanta a third-place finish in the Serie A.
Former Italy manager Luciano Spalletti has also lauded the centre-forward in the past, saying: “Inside the box, he is lethal. And now he has learned how to connect with the team better. He’s going to become a top player.”
Retegui has continued to catch the eye for his country in World Cup qualification, scoring in his side’s recent 3-1 victory over Estonia and 3-0 triumph against Israel, and the striker’s displays for both club and country suggest he would be a top signing for Man United.
