The Liverpool star was fielded in central midfield instead of his usual position at right-back. While his performance in England's 1-0 win over Serbia on Sunday drew criticism from some quarters, manager Gareth Southgate came to the player's defence after the game.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Three Lions boss said, "I have to say, he has been really diligent in getting his positioning right. I think he adapted and adjusted really well and used the ball well. We have got a squad and we need to use it."
