In the opening minutes of Tottenham's 1-0 victory against Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, Bentancur fell to the turf in worrisome fashion. He had gone up to meet a Spurs corner with a diving header, but missed the ball completely and collapsed to the floor with no one around him. Medical staff were quickly called onto the pitch, with the Uruguayan receiving oxygen through a mask before being stretchered off after eight minutes of treatment.

In the absence of Bentancur, Ange Postecoglou's side went on to secure a fine win against top opposition, with Wednesday's 1-0 triumph a far better showing against Arne Slot's Reds than last month's harrowing 6-3 defeat. Lucas Bergvall scored the game's only goal, sweeping home at the end of a fine team move only minutes after the visitors wanted him sent off for a second bookable offence.
