In light of Alan Shearer naming his greatest Premier League XI – my editor said to me that he wanted me to write my own Premier League eleven. What I didn’t understand was that he said this to me in a relaxed manner, like it was easy and achievable to condense nearly two decades worth of football’s ultimate talent into one starting eleven. Here goes nothing.
Firstly let me apologise to the likes of Ruud Van Nistelrooy, David James and Paul Gascoigne; so many have graced the game with flare, clean sheets and goals alike it has been hard leaving out such talent. These choices will obviously provoke disdain from some quarters but if we all agreed on the same XI then Saturday afternoon football banter would be a thing of the past.
I went for an extremely unorthodox 3-4-3 formation.
